Blackfriars Publications was set up in 1992 under the patronage and control of the English Province of the Order of Preachers or Dominicans, (‘Blackfriars’ – our English medieval nickname – comes from the black cloak worn over the white habit.) We print and publish papers, articles, addresses, lectures, sermons, conference material, periodicals etc. (in the range of 5,000-20,000 words) in relatively small quantities in professional quality and at competitive prices in an attractive, but traditional, style. In a standard A5 format, with coloured and mostly illustrated covers, normally set in 9pt to 10pt Times Roman equivalent (e.g. Garamond Antiqua, Palatino, New Century Schoolbook ...) or an attractive modern Sanserif (e.g. Omega, Univers etc.) Once set up, extra quantities are readily available in small numbers at any later date.

The Catalogue contains a list of all the booklets available from Blaclfriars Publications (Cuirrent catalogue Spring 2005 – soon to be updated.)

The Electronic Library contains papers and articles which have not been published in booklet form, together with the texts (in HTML format) of a number of the booklets. There is also an ‘independent website’ of the Pilgrimage to Santiago, made by Fabian Radcliffe O.P. in 2004.

There is also a new Site of English Dominican Preaching: Torch
(See also links below)

Our General Purpose

Extending the Apostolate

This is not just small-scale traditional publishing, but a new venture using state of the art techniques, especially set up to make the dissemination of lecture material (etc.) available at a high quality, for relatively restricted distribution. The basic purpose of the project is to extend the apostolate of the Dominican Order and encourage those, with whom it is associated and with whom it works, to do likewise. The Press is also able to undertake limited printing jobs for those whose work is sympathetic to its aims.

Justice, Peace and Prayer

Whilst a lot of the material published comes from the hand of members of the Dominican Order, the editors welcome contributions from varying traditions and denominations and the work of lay as well as ‘religious’ theologians, particularly in the areas of justice and peace, biblical, feminist, ecumenical and political theology. Scriptural and spiritual theology, concerned with prayer and meditation, are part of our particular interest, and we are also committed to this sort of material within the Christian Classics, e.g. Augustine of Hippo, Anselm of Canterbury, Thomas Aquinas etc.
